Small Prophets: A charming comedy comes to Apple TV

The BBC comedy about magical homunculi arrives on Apple TV on October 7.

A still from the TV series Small Prophets.

The Verge reports that Small Prophets, a six-episode BBC comedy, will begin streaming on Apple TV on October 7. The show premiered on the BBC earlier this year. It follows Michael Sleep (Pearce Quigley), a hardware store worker who has been living as a hermit since his girlfriend disappeared seven years ago.

His elderly father (Michael Palin) gives him a secret alchemical recipe to grow tiny magical beings called homunculi that can answer any question. Desperate to know if he will ever see his girlfriend again, Michael tries it, despite his skepticism. The results are chaotic and comedic.

Michael partners with his coworker Kacey (Lauren Patel) to grow the homunculi, while his father causes trouble at the nursing home, neighbors complain about his messy yard, and his girlfriend's brother (Paul Kaye) tries to take the house. The homunculi grow in size and power as the story unfolds.

What makes it worth watching

The Verge calls Small Prophets charming. Michael is an isolated shut-in with a big beard, but he's funny and lovable to those he likes. He cracks jokes, helps friends and family, but is rude to others. There's a bittersweet humor as he holds onto hope that his girlfriend is still out there. The show has strong supporting cast, mystery, and a mix of sweet and silly tones.

The Verge notes the show fits well on Apple TV, slotting between the overbearing comfort of Ted Lasso and the supernatural horror-comedy of Widow's Bay. Small Prophets is more whimsical, with homunculi that look like stop-motion puppets. The service has been expanding its lineup in 2026 with new shows, and Small Prophets helps broaden the range.

Verdict: Stream it

If you have Apple TV and enjoy British humor with a touch of magical realism, this is a charming six-episode binge. The show ends with a "to be continued," so expect more.
