OLED MacBook Pro Rumored to Be Significantly Lighter

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says Apple is trimming the Pro laptop's weight. Here's what that means before you buy.

Apple's next MacBook Pro is reportedly getting a serious weight cut.

Reported by MacRumors, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said in his Power On newsletter that the new OLED MacBook Pro models will be "significantly lighter" than the current ones. He says Apple has "reengineered the machine's interior, miniaturizing parts and rearranging components" to make it easier to carry.

Where the weight stands now

The current MacBook Pro tops out at 4.7 pounds. For context, the MacBook Air goes up to 3.3 pounds and the MacBook Neo comes in at 2.7 pounds. So "lighter" is relative, but the direction is right.

Gurman expects Apple to release the OLED MacBook Pro in October or November, running macOS 27.2, which is currently in beta. MacRumors says these OLED models will sit above the current MacBook Pro lineup and carry higher prices.

Should you wait?

Yes, unless you need a laptop this week. If you're on a 2022 or older MacBook Pro, this is the upgrade cycle to hold out for. If you just bought a current MacBook Pro, the weight cut alone is not a reason to trade in. A pound or less won't change how it feels in your bag the way a thinner case will.

What to do today

Set a reminder for October. The interesting question isn't just whether it's lighter. It's whether Apple fixes the things people actually complain about, and what the price ends up being. Until then, keep what you have.
