Xbox Series X: How Long Before You Need to Upgrade?

Microsoft's disc-to-digital conversion raises questions about the console's lifespan, but the hardware and software support suggest it will last years.

When Microsoft announced a feature that converts thousands of physical Xbox discs into digital versions, it naturally sparked conversations about an all-digital future. But for now, the Xbox Series X remains a powerful console with plenty of life left, according to Engadget.

The Xbox Series X launched in 2020, and while component prices are rising, it hasn't hit the end of its life cycle. Major titles like GTA VI are still coming to the console, and will continue to do so for the near future.

Microsoft's track record suggests long support. The Xbox One, released in 2013, is still getting software updates in 2026, meaning the Series X should see updates years after its successor arrives. Most games continued launching on the Xbox One for years after the Series X debuted, and that pattern goes back to the original Xbox.

Asha Sharma, Xbox boss, told the BBC that Microsoft's next console, code-named Project Helix, will focus on affordability. But Engadget notes that higher next-gen console prices could actually extend the Xbox Series X's market life.

Some exceptions, like Black Ops 7 and Hollow Knight: Silksong, appeared on the Xbox One last year. Most publishers abandon the previous generation after a couple of years. Live-service games like Fortnite still support older consoles, but few AAA titles come out on the Xbox One now. Without a firm release date for Project Helix, Engadget suggests the Series X will likely see new AAA games for at least a couple of years.

Hardware longevity requires maintenance. Engadget recommends keeping vents and ports clean to prevent dust from blocking airflow. iFixit offers a guide on opening and cleaning the heatsinks and internal fan. Microsoft advises cleaning the controller with a soft cloth and isopropyl alcohol solution. Placing the console in a well-ventilated area helps avoid overheating, even though the Series X has better thermal performance than the PlayStation 5. A louder-than-usual fan may signal a need for maintenance before the console shuts down with an overheating warning.

The Xbox Series X is fairly repairable. Key failure points include the disc drive, power supply unit and HDMI ports. Internal access is straightforward: replacing the power supply, internal storage and antenna boards requires only a driver set and patience. The disc drive needs basic soldering, while replacing an HDMI port requires advanced microsoldering skills. Some replacement parts are available directly from Microsoft; others require searching third-party marketplaces. Microsoft also offers out-of-warranty servicing, though Engadget notes that service will likely be retired eventually.
