Set Up Live Activities on iPhone and CarPlay

A step-by-step guide to enabling and managing Live Activities across your iPhone and CarPlay.

Engadget reports that Apple's Dynamic Island, introduced with the iPhone 14 Pro, uses the area around the front camera cutout to display Live Activities. These show real-time information like timers, navigation, music, and sports scores without opening the app. They appear on the Dynamic Island while you use your phone and on the Lock Screen when it's idle.

To enable Live Activities for a specific app, go to Settings > Apps on your iPhone. Tap the app you want to adjust and make sure the Live Activities toggle is on. Engadget notes that Live Activities should be enabled by default, but you may need to check if notifications are also turned on for the app to receive updates.

To allow Live Activities on the Lock Screen, open Settings > Face ID & Passcode. Enter your passcode, then scroll down to the Allow Access When Locked section and confirm Live Activities is enabled.

On CarPlay, Live Activities appear automatically on the Dashboard, the split-screen view to the left of your app list. If you use a full-screen app, they show as notifications at the bottom. If you don't see them, open the Settings app in CarPlay and enable the Live Activities toggle. Also make sure Suggestions in CarPlay or Suggestions in Dashboard is on. Engadget suggests turning off Driving Focus if it's interfering.

You can disable Live Activities for any app by following the same Settings path on your iPhone and toggling the slider off. CarPlay also lets you add widgets to the Dashboard for quick access to app controls.
