macOS 27.2 Adds Touch Gesture Code, Hinting at Touchscreen MacBook

Code in the latest beta adds touch-specific gestures to Safari, Photos, Notes, and Quick Look, but it could also be for Sidecar, MacRumors reports.

The latest beta of macOS Golden Gate 27.2 includes code that points to new touch gestures in several Apple apps, according to MacRumors. The website found references to gesture recognizers in Safari, Photos, Notes, and Quick Look that could be preparing for a rumored OLED touchscreen MacBook, possibly called the MacBook Ultra.

Safari now has a touch sentinel recognizer, Photos has a “PXGTouchDwellGestureRecognizer,” Notes an “ICTouchPressGestureRecognizer,” and Quick Look a drag-touch feature. These are all new additions in the beta.

However, MacRumors notes the code is not a clear sign of a new Mac. macOS Golden Gate already brought full touch input to Sidecar, the feature that turns an iPad into a Mac display. Apple could simply be expanding Sidecar’s capabilities, making the gesture code ambiguous.

Touch-friendly changes started with the initial release of macOS Golden Gate, which added pull-to-refresh gestures in Safari, Mail, and Calendar.

A rumored OLED MacBook Ultra with touch could launch as late as 2026. It is said to be thinner and lighter than current models, with a Dynamic Island and M5 Pro or M5 Max chips.

For now, this code is a Rumor-level signal. If you are holding out for a touchscreen MacBook, the timeline is years away, and the evidence is mixed. There is no reason to delay a Mac purchase over this.
