ChatGPT adding ads in image generation
OpenAI confirms a new visual ad format will appear during image generation in the ChatGPT app, starting with a US test later this month.

9to5Google reports that OpenAI has confirmed the ChatGPT app will add a new visual ad format. The ads will appear when prompts are processing, specifically during image generation.
OpenAI says the format is designed to show how products or services could fit into people's lives, with images showing product inspiration or usage. The ads will be clearly labeled and separate from the image the user is creating. OpenAI also states that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.
The test begins later this month in the US. A broad rollout hasn't been confirmed yet. OpenAI previously tested ads that appeared at the bottom of answers, such as a grocery delivery ad below a recipe response. Early findings, per OpenAI, show lower cost per acquisition and higher rates of new customers for businesses.
What this means for you: if you use ChatGPT on mobile, you'll start seeing these visual ads during image generation. They won't affect your generated images or answers. You can't turn them off, but they will be labeled. Keep an eye on the app for the test.
